Opalware dinnerware: a wholesale buying guide for shops

5 min readUpdated By FAMES

Opalware is a staple of household and discount shops across the Gulf: white, practical and easy to match. Lines still differ in finish, print quality and packing, and those differences show up in returns and repeat sales. Here is what to look at before you buy in volume.

What opalware is

Opalware is tableware made from opal glass, a white glass that looks opaque rather than clear. The milky colour comes from tiny particles in the glass that scatter light.1 Many opalware brands describe their products as toughened opal glass.2

Properties such as strength, microwave use and dishwasher use vary between brands and product lines. Rely on each item's own marking and the supplier's confirmation, not on general claims about opalware.

What sells on the shelf

  • Plain white plates and bowls for everyday use and easy replacement
  • Printed borders and patterns, often floral, for customers who want colour on the table
  • Dinner sets for new homes, gifts and the run-up to Ramadan and Eid
  • Open stock plates, soup plates and bowls, so customers can replace single pieces

Keeping a design available as both a set and as open stock helps repeat sales: customers come back for the pieces that break.

What to check on samples

  • Rims and edges are smooth and free of chips.
  • Prints are centred, sharp and consistent from piece to piece.
  • The white is the same shade across a carton, so plates match on the shelf.
  • Plates sit flat and stack evenly.
  • Markings on the base or packaging for microwave or dishwasher use, if you plan to advertise them.

Packing and delivery

Opalware is glass, so packing decides how much arrives in sellable condition. Ask how pieces are separated inside each carton, how many pieces a carton holds, and how cartons are protected during delivery. Check the first delivery of a new item carefully and tell your supplier straight away if anything arrived damaged.
